Quick TakeawayConstant beeping, no beeping, or a black camera screen? Here is what usually goes wrong with parking sensors and reversing cameras, and what can be repaired.
Reversing into a tight space in a mall car park is exactly when you want your parking sensors to work. So it is a particularly unwelcome surprise when they beep constantly with nothing nearby, stay silent when you are inches from a pillar, or when the reversing camera shows a black screen.
These systems look simple, but they involve sensors, wiring, control modules and displays. The good news is that many faults come down to a short list of causes, and some of them are very easy to check.
How the Systems Work
Parking sensors are small units in the bumper that send out ultrasonic pulses and measure how long the echo takes to return. The control module turns that into beeps or a graphic on the screen.
Reversing cameras are small cameras, usually near the boot handle or tailgate, that send an image to the infotainment screen when you select reverse.
Both rely on stable power, clean surfaces, intact wiring and a working display. A fault in any of those can make the system misbehave.
Parking Sensors: What the Symptoms Mean
Constant beeping with nothing in the way
Possible causes:
- Dirt, mud, sand or water on one or more sensors
- A sensor that has been knocked out of position or damaged by a minor bump
- A faulty sensor reporting a false obstacle
- Water inside the sensor or its connector
